When it comes to User-Agent, most people are probably familiar with it. Many know that it is “important,” but if you really ask: what are the obvious differences between browser UAs and crawler UAs?

To be honest, quite a few people don’t really know how to distinguish them. And the difference between browser UAs and crawler UAs is far more than just “whether it’s a spider or not.”

Today, drawing on my own experience in building websites, analyzing logs, and troubleshooting abnormal traffic, I’d like to talk about the core differences between browser UAs and crawler UAs.

I. First, let’s be clear: What is a User-Agent ?

Simply put, a User-Agent (UA) is a short “self-introduction” that a browser or program sends along when making a request to a server.

Through User-Agent parsing, a server can usually determine:

• Whether the request comes from a browser

• Which operating system is being used (Windows / macOS / Android / iOS)

• The browser type and version

• Whether it is a search engine crawler or an automated program

So the UA itself is not mysterious, but it is the first line of defense when identifying visitors.

II. Typical characteristics of browser UAs

1. Complex structure with rich information

For example, a common Chrome browser UA roughly includes:

• Operating system information

• Rendering engine details (AppleWebKit, KHTML)

• Browser name and version

• Compatibility identifiers (Mozilla)

To maintain compatibility with legacy websites, real browsers often have long and messy UAs—this is perfectly normal.

2. Frequent and reasonable version updates

Real browsers:

• Chrome and Edge follow stable version update cycles

• Do not show obviously unrealistic version combinations

If you see a UA in your logs where Chrome is very old but the operating system is brand new, it’s worth taking a closer look.

3. Works together with browser fingerprinting

Nowadays, looking at the UA alone is no longer enough. Real browsers usually also support:

• Canvas fingerprinting

• WebGL fingerprinting

• Font lists

• Screen resolution, and more

This is why many risk-control systems combine browser fingerprinting instead of relying solely on UA strings.

III. Common crawler UA traits you can spot at a glance

1. Explicitly declaring identity (legitimate crawlers)

Official search engine crawlers are usually very “honest,” such as Googlebot, Bingbot, and Baiduspider.

These crawler UAs clearly state who they are, have official documentation, and their IPs can be reverse-verified.

In SEO work, these crawlers are actually the “key audiences” to serve.

2. Overly simple or obviously patched UAs (gray or malicious crawlers)

Common issues with non-legitimate crawlers include:

• UA containing only “Mozilla/5.0”

• Browser versions that do not match the operating system

• Copying browser UAs but missing critical details

Such crawlers that disguise themselves as browsers are very common in access logs.

3. Fixed UA with abnormal access behavior

Real users:

• Relatively stable UA, but random navigation paths

• Have dwell time, jumps, and return visits

Crawlers:

• UA remains unchanged

• High-frequency crawling in a short period

• Extremely regular access patterns

By combining User-Agent parsing with behavioral analysis, you can usually identify them with high confidence.

IV. Why is User-Agent parsing no longer enough?

In recent years, many crawlers have learned to “copy homework” by directly cloning Chrome browser UAs.

They simulate common systems and version numbers, so today the more common approach is:

• UA + browser fingerprint

• UA + JavaScript behavior

• UA + IP reputation
